A short history
Once part of the Bishop of London's hunting ground, the oldest part of the village dates back to the 17th century. The development of the Great Northern Railway in 1868 led to the development of some streets but it wasn't until 1914 that a thriving commercial centre emerged on East Finchley High Road where it remains today.
Green spaces and going out
Opposite East Finchley Tube station lies Cherry Tree Wood, a 10-acre area of grassland and woodland which has playgrounds and tennis courts. Every June, it also hosts the East Finchley Festival. The independent Phoenix Cinema shows art house movies and is the oldest purpose-built cinema in the UK. It was recently saved by locals from being taken over by a chain.
Transport
Each Finchley Underground station (Zone 3) is on the High Barnet branch of the Northern Line. Journeys to central London take 20 minutes.
