A little bit of history
Farnham originated in Roman times however Farnham Castle was built in the 12th century by the Bishop of Winchester. Farnham was known for producing wool cloth, green pots, and growing hops and wheat. The town grew rapidly during Georgian and Victorian times with the railway arriving in 1848, but is known as a Georgian Town because the main roads of Castle Street, West Street and The Borough, predominantly have either Georgian properties or Georgian fronted older properties. A feature of Farnham of this period was the number of Public Houses, with around 50 operating at one point. The building Winkworth Estate Agents operates from was once 'The Prince of Wales' closing around 1900.
Farnham's most famous architect, Harold Falkner (1875-1963) had a profound influence on architectural style in Farnham for much of the 20th century.
In the 1970's the A31 at the Hogs Back was turned into a dual carriageway and the A331 Blackwater dual carriageway linking to the M3 was opened in 1996, making Farnham much more accessible by road and increasing its suitability as a commuter town. Today the population of Farnham is about 40,000.
